Founded in 1990 with the idea of being by skaters, for skaters, Fenchurch clothing soon entrenched itself on the underground fashion scene. Nearly 20 years on and it is now a household name amongst young people who take an interest in how they look.

The staple of the skater wardrobe is the hoodie, a modern take on the traditional hooded robe worn by monks and hermits in times of old. It is believed that the adoption of the hoodie by the skater fraternity is symbolic of their struggle against authority, a trait they shared with their monk brothers. Whereas monks railed against religious persecution, Fenchurch clothing adorned skaters of today are oppressed by council by-laws preventing them from skating in their favourite public areas.

Fenchurch clothing takes this continuation of the centuries old battle of minorities against oppression and gives it a contemporary twist, shortening the hem from ankle to hip, and using modern synthetic or machine woven fabrics rather than the traditional heavy wool.

Fenchurch clothing hoodies dovetail well with the other skater fashion stables of wallet chains and piercings, also lifted from medieval monk garb. The wallet chain represents the rosary beads that would have been carried by catholic monks, and the piercings represent the various methods of torture they were subjected to during the reformation. This historical theme is repeated throughout their range, the designers at Fenchurch clothing obviously keen to ensure the plight of monks throughout the middle-ages will not be forgotten.
