Grand Pianos
Grand pianos are very popular instruments, although few people actually own the full sized grand pianos that are often seen in concert halls. Grand pianos have become deeply ingrained in our culture and are often considered to be iconic instruments by many people. Many world famous pianist have played grand pianos and the instrument has a long association with classical music.
The construction of grand pianos is a very labour intensive and time consuming process that requires a great deal of refined skilled. The difficulty of their manufacture is reflected in the price of grand pianos and the finest examples can sell for prices in excess of one hundred thousand pounds. However, there are cheaper examples of grand pianos, notably the smaller versions which are designed to be used in people's homes.
However, even these more inexpensive grand pianos are significantly more expensive than the more common and conveniently proportioned upright piano. Grand pianos are considered by many to be something of a status symbol and as a result they can often be found in the homes of many wealthy people, regardless of whether than can actually play the piano. Due to their elegance and size grand pianos are often thought of as examples of fine furniture.
